Stomach or gastric cancer is the 7th most common cancer in Singaporean men and the 9th most common in Singaporean women. Overall the numbers of stomach cancers are decreasing worldwide, but in Asia, the number of incidences remains high.
Causes and Risks
A diet containing large amounts of smoked and salted fish or meat, as well as pickled foods, is associated with an increased risk of stomach cancer.
Symptoms and Diagnosis
Symptoms of stomach cancer are non-specific and can range from indigestion to vomiting and blood loss. A lack of red blood cells or anaemia would generally raise suspicion too and call for further testing like an x-ray or endoscopy.
Treatment
The most effective method of treating stomach cancer is surgery. This is often followed by radiotherapy. Chemotherapy is recommended in advanced cases to slow the growth of the cancer.
