Getting cancer is not just down to genes, fate or bad luck. It is a combination of our environment, genes, and lifestyle. We are able to control the way we live and reduce our exposure to cancer-causing habits.
Habit #1: Use Sunscreen
It is a good habit to always apply sunscreen to exposed skin when going outside. Sun tanning should be avoided, to minimise the chances of sunburns and too much UV exposure.
Habit #2: Do not smoke
First and second-hand smoking has been linked to various types of cancer. All tobacco products should be avoided.
Habit #3: Eat a healthy diet
Limit processed meats, drink alcohol in moderation and eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.
Habit #4: Be physically active
Exercise helps to control your weight and lowers the risk of certain cancers. 150 minutes of moderate activity, such as brisk walking is enough to reap the benefits. As a general goal, we should exercise at least 30 minutes daily.
Habit #5: Get vaccinated
Certain viral infections such as Hepatitis and HPV increase the risk of cancer. It is important to be immunised and get the recommended booster shots.
Remember to get regular medical care and advice at your GP and look out for any sudden bodily changes.
