Uterine or Endometrium (Uterus) Cancer is the 4th most common cancer in women in Singapore.
Causes and Risks
Causes and risks associated with uterine cancer include obesity, diabetes and hypertension, oestrogen stimulation and PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). In over 40% of patients, however, there are no causes or risks factors identified.
Although any women at any age may be at risk of uterus cancer, most cases of uterine cancer occur after the age of 50.
Symptoms
Key symptoms of endometrium cancer include abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge and pelvic pain.
Diagnosis
In a regular check-up at the gynaecologist, the uterine lining (endometrium) should be screened to detect any abnormality. Should there be a suspicion of cancer, a biopsy is necessary, which can be performed through a minimally invasive surgery (hysteroscopy).
Treatment
In most cases, the uterus and fallopian tubes, ovaries are removed and the lymphatics are drained. Following the surgery radiotherapy, hormonal therapy or chemotherapy may be necessary.
